Suffer Alone

By Alexandra Ciprianita Saavedra

Suffer alone, bringing nobody in,

Don’t talk about it with friends,

Don’t allow them in,

Don’t mention this traitorous void within.

A whole that is inside, a dark place,

Filled with thoughts,

Filled with the past,

Filled with a lingering depth,

So, is this a void at all?

Breathe, sing, read, think nice things,

Care, love, dance, be carefree,

Maybe it’s gone, you would think,

But alas, the void is still beating.

Phantom pain, random and seemingly in vain,

Wondering if this suffering will end,

Not knowing if it will,

And not willing to pretend,

Suffer alone, maybe until the end,

But holding yourself high,

Picking yourself up,

Knowing the void within.

Knowing the void within,

Living with the void within,

Maybe not suffering alone,

The void within helps you go,

Further than you should,

Doing more than you ever thought you could,

The void within, is there,

Don’t allow the numbness to sit in,

Take your void and handle with care,

Control the void within,

Don’t let it control you.

Suffer alone, maybe yes, maybe no.
